Our Unique Approach to Mole Removal

At our mole removal London clinic, our approach is thorough, cautious, and tailored. No two moles are round or identical—and your treatment should reflect that. Whether you’re here for a mole that bothers you aesthetically or because you’re concerned about a mole that has changed, we’re here to guide you toward the right solution.

Why is accurate diagnosis crucial before mole removal?

Most moles are harmless, but some may mimic or even be skin cancer. Moles arise from nevus cells, which are the same pigment-producing cells involved in melanoma, a potentially serious form of skin cancer. That’s why we never recommend removing your mole without first performing a proper clinical assessment by an experienced professional.

We offer a complete diagnosis and treatment process. Every mole is examined clinically, and if there is any suspicion about its nature, the removed tissue is always sent for histological analysis to Unilabs, our pathology partner, to establish a definitive diagnosis. This process ensures that nothing concerning is missed and that the correct mole removal method is chosen.

If the diagnosing clinician is confident—based on experience and examination—that the lesion is benign and shows no atypical features, we may discuss with the patient the option to forgo histological analysis. However, mole removal techniques that do not allow for tissue analysis, such as laser or cauterisation, are never appropriate in cases of diagnostic uncertainty.

What factors influence the decision to remove moles?

There are a few common reasons for mole removal:

  • Cosmetic mole removal for visible or large raised moles
  • Moles that protrude or cause friction when shaving or wearing clothing
  • Changes in colour, shape, or size that may suggest a cancerous mole

We also address skin lesions such as skin tags, seborrhoeic keratoses, and other growths. Whether your mole needs removing for comfort or safety, we’ll explain the best approach.

How does the location of the mole affect healing?

The appearance of a mole is only one part of planning. The surface of the skin, thickness, and tension in the area play roles in how a wound heals.

  • Facial moles usually heal well with a minimal permanent scar
  • The chest and shoulders may be prone to keloids, so caution is needed here
  • The back may heal more slowly due to thicker skin and tension

We always tailor our mole removal procedure to reduce visible marks. Following your mole removal, you’ll receive full instructions on wound care and aftercare.

What are the available mole removal methods?

We offer several forms of mole removal, depending on the type of mole, location, and need for biopsy:

  • Excision mole removal – This surgical procedure involves removing the entire mole and a margin of healthy skin. It’s often used for suspicious moles and when histology is required.
  • Shave excision mole removal – A less invasive option for raised moles, leaving a flatter result with little to no stitching.
  • Cauterisation – A heat-based method used on small, benign lesions. Fast healing and often used for skin tag removal.

Each technique comes with different pros and cons. Dr. Bela may recommend one method over another based on your goals and the medical evaluation.

What you should know about Shave Biopsy and Non-Excisional mole removal

Most moles, including intradermal moles, are not just on the surface of the skin—they often extend from the epidermis into the upper dermis. This means they have depth.

When a mole is removed with a shave biopsy, laser, cauterisation, or cryotherapy, only the upper part of the mole is removed. The deeper portion remains. While this doesn’t make a benign mole cancerous, the healing process can trigger regrowth of the remaining cells through the release of growth factors.

Sometimes, this regrowth results in a darker mole reappearing at the same site—even if the original mole was colourless. This is known as a pseudomelanoma. It’s benign, but it can look concerning and may be confusing even to pathologists. In such cases, surgical excision is needed to completely remove the mole.

For this reason, non-excisional methods should be used with caution, especially on moles that have depth or cosmetic importance. Patients should understand this risk when deciding on a mole removal method.

Is histological analysis always performed?

If there’s any sign the mole may be cancerous or atypical, we will always send the tissue to a laboratory for examination under a microscope. This ensures nothing is missed.

In clearly benign cases—such as a common nevus, skin tag, or keratosis—we may discuss the option to skip histology. But this decision rests on clinical judgment.

What does aftercare involve?

Aftercare is key to a smooth recovery.

  • Initial healing: Keep the wound dry and clean. Avoid heavy activity.
  • Cream and scar care: Use recommended cream or silicone tape to reduce the risk of a small scar.
  • Sun protection: Limit UV exposure for at least 18 months to avoid pigmentation changes.

Why aesthetic patients should consider a mole check?

Over the years, Dr. Bela has identified multiple melanomas on aesthetic patients—often in areas they hadn’t noticed themselves. In one notable case, during a Botox consultation, he spotted a small but suspicious lesion on a patient’s forehead. When reviewing previous treatment photos, it became clear that the melanoma had gradually developed over time, becoming increasingly visible across sessions. Despite its small size, the lesion was already an early invasive melanoma—but was thankfully detected in time. This case is just one of several examples highlighting how melanoma can remain hidden in plain sight. For this reason, Dr. Bela now offers a discounted mole check for all existing aesthetic patients, making it easier to combine cosmetic care with life-saving early detection.

Frequently asked questions

No. We use local anaesthetic to keep you numb, and most patients feel no more than mild pressure.

Most moles that protrude into deeper skin layers leave a small scar when removed. Only very superficial lesions confined to the epidermis can be removed without a mark. We aim for minimal scarring using the right method and aftercare.

Yes—especially if the mole is removed by shave excision or cauterisation. When a mole may come back, it can sometimes resemble melanoma, even though it’s benign. This is known as a pseudomelanoma. Complete removal reduces this risk.

Yes, but we recommend doing so only after medical evaluation. Cosmetic reasons alone shouldn’t override professional judgement.

No. Many moles are more likely to stay benign throughout life. However, moles that change or develop new symptoms may recommend removal for diagnostic reasons.

Yes—we treat a wide range of skin lesions, including skin tag removal, seborrhoeic keratoses, and more.
