Nasolabial Fold Filler

Nasolabial folds—the lines that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth—are one of the most common signs of ageing. Also known as smile lines or laugh lines, these creases become more pronounced over time due to volume loss, repetitive facial movements like smiling, and a natural loss of collagen and elastin. While these folds are a natural part of ageing, many people find that they begin to affect the overall youthful appearance of their face.

Nasolabial fold filler is a safe and effective filler treatment for reducing the appearance of these lines without surgery. At our cosmetic clinic in Chiswick, Dr. Bela uses dermal filler injections to restore lost volume, smooth the skin, and subtly lift the lower face—creating a fresher, more rested look. This non-invasive treatment option is customised to your individual facial anatomy, skin type, and aesthetic goals.

Our advanced approach to nasolabial fold injection treatment

What are nasolabial folds and why do they form?

Nasolabial folds are the lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth, commonly deepening as we age. These creases, while completely normal, become more prominent over time due to facial expressions, skin laxity, and declining collagen production. When the nasolabial folds become more pronounced, they can cause the face to appear tired or older than it really is. Treating them with fillers offers a natural-looking lift and smoothness.

How does nasolabial fold filler injection work?

Using hyaluronic acid-based fillers—which are among the most common types of fillers—Dr. Bela carefully injects filler into the nasolabial area to add volume and soften deep folds. The filler is injected strategically to support the skin and lift the surrounding tissue. These fillers are specifically designed to integrate smoothly into the skin, improving the appearance of nasolabial folds and marionette lines without overfilling or distortion.

Why not treat the folds first?

Historically, nasolabial fold filler treatments were the starting point of most dermal filler sessions. However, modern aesthetics now favour a more comprehensive approach. Dr. Bela begins by assessing volume loss in the cheek and mid-face area. By lifting and supporting these areas of the face, the nasolabial folds become less visible on their own. Only then does he treat the folds directly, using minimal filler for refined, natural-looking results.

What is the piriform fossa and why is it important?

The piriform fossa—the upper third of the nasolabial fold, just below the nostrils—is a key zone in the 8-point facelift. This area tends to become more volume-depleted as we age, and supporting it with fillers brings significant improvement to the overall look. For this reason, one of the 8-point lift injection sites is dedicated specifically to the piriform fossa. Dr. Bela treats this area carefully, often using a blunt cannula for safety. In select cases, especially when the piriform fossa is treated in isolation, he may choose a needle injection instead.

What type of filler is used?

The type of filler used depends on the severity of the fold and the individual’s skin type. At our clinic, we primarily use FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers because they are safe, injectable, and known for their ability to smooth lines while boosting hydration and collagen support in the skin. These dermal fillers are often selected for their longevity and natural texture.

What happens during the nasolabial fold filler procedure?

The nasolabial fold filler procedure takes about 30 minutes. After your consultation, Dr. Bela will design a tailored treatment plan. Because the fillers are generally well-tolerated, numbing cream is not needed. Depending on the structure of the folds, either a blunt cannula or a fine needle will be used to safely place the filler along the nose to the corners of the mouth. There may be some minor swelling or redness, but there’s no significant recovery time.

What can I expect after the Nasolabial Filler treatment?

You’ll see results immediately, although full settling occurs over a few days. Some patients experience mild swelling or bruising at the injection sites, which resolves quickly. Dr. Bela provides personalised aftercare advice to ensure your results are optimised and healing is smooth.

Because the dermal fillers used stimulate hydration and collagen production, results continue to improve and can last anywhere from 12 to 24 months. Fillers last longer in areas with less movement and are maintained with periodic touch-ups for best results.

Why aesthetic patients should consider a mole check?

Over the years, Dr. Bela has identified multiple melanomas on aesthetic patients—often in areas they hadn’t noticed themselves. In one notable case, during a Botox consultation, he spotted a small but suspicious lesion on a patient’s forehead. When reviewing previous treatment photos, it became clear that the melanoma had gradually developed over time, becoming increasingly visible across sessions. Despite its small size, the lesion was already an early invasive melanoma—but was thankfully detected in time. This case is just one of several examples highlighting how melanoma can remain hidden in plain sight. For this reason, Dr. Bela now offers a discounted mole check for all existing aesthetic patients, making it easier to combine cosmetic care with life-saving early detection.
