A milestone in dermatology and skin cancer screening
Earlier this year, just before opening our new Chiswick Clinic in West London, I had the honour of participating in a very special event: the 20-year anniversary of MelanomaMobil; excellence in mole mapping. This mole mapping service began two decades ago with a single mission — saving lives through early detection of melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.
More than 100 dermatologists gathered in Budapest, Hungary to reflect on the progress we’ve made. It was an emotional and proud moment, celebrating how a simple idea became one of the leading mole mapping programmes in Europe. Today, MelanomaMobil stands for clinical excellence and innovation in dermatology.
Sharing knowledge with top doctors
At the event, I delivered two keynote lectures. The first focused on pattern analysis in dermoscopy — an essential method we use in skin cancer screening to detect early signs of melanoma. A dermatoscope allows the dermatologist to examine moles on your body with magnification and polarised light, helping identify even the smallest changes in moles over time.
My second talk reflected on my experience at the Dermatoscopy Excellence Masterclass in Rome. It reminded all of us that ongoing training remains key in developing our mole mapping methodology. As dermatologists, we must keep learning so we can detect cancerous moles at the earliest possible stage.
Highlights from the global dermatology community
Our Hungarian Medical Director, Adrien presented two insightful lectures: one on the best melanoma cases we’ve diagnosed over the past 20 years, and another summarising the 6th World Congress of Dermatoscopy in Buenos Aires. Both sessions reminded us how important it is to track moles and skin lesions using high-resolution imaging technology and dermatoscopic images.
For patients with a personal or family history of skin cancer, or a large number of moles, regular mole mapping is the best tool available to support early diagnosis. Mole mapping is an advanced, non-invasive procedure that uses photography and dermoscopy to create a mole map of every mole on your body.
From a young doctor to a specialist in mole mapping
Twenty years ago, I was a young dermatologist working at the National Institute of Oncology in Budapest. I had seen too many patients with advanced melanoma—where the cancer had already spread. I knew we needed a better system for early detection.
That’s when I began developing what would become our mole mapping methodology. Today, this mole mapping service is helping in reducing the risk of developing skin cancer through early detection and diagnosis.
What makes mole mapping so powerful?
Mole mapping is a process that involves a full body clinical examination, photography, and dermoscopy to capture and monitor every mole. This allows the dermatologist to identify any new or changing moles, track changes in moles over time, and detect skin cancer before symptoms appear.
The benefits of mole mapping include:
- Monitoring individual moles and detect changes over time
- Identifying new moles or changes in size, shape, or colour
- Comparing images over time to detect early signs of skin cancer
- Creating a digital record of your moles for ongoing reference
What does this mean for Chiswick Clinic patients?
It means you are looked after by a team shaped by two decades of experience in mole mapping, mole removal, and the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions. When you visit our mole clinic in West London, you’re getting care informed by thousands of cancer screenings, tracked cases, and successful early diagnoses.
Every mole mapping appointment includes a full body clinical examination, dermoscopy, and photography. All dermoscopic images are analysed and stored securely for future comparison. If we find a suspicious mole or lesion, we can recommend mole removal or biopsy to ensure any cancerous mole is effectively removed early.
Who should consider mole mapping?
Mole mapping is especially useful for people with:
- A lot of moles or atypical moles
- New or changing moles
- A personal or family history of skin cancer
- A past history of sunburn or fair skin type
- Concerns about a particular freckle, skin lesion, or mole
If you fall into any of these categories, consider mole mapping as part of your long-term skin care plan.
Why mapping is the best tool for early detection
Mapping is the best tool to monitor changes in your skin. Using the latest technology, including high-resolution digital photography and dermoscopy, mole mapping is a non-invasive way to examine your skin for suspicious or cancerous moles.
